What is android ?

Android is a Linux based Operating System(OS) for mobile devices which is urbanized by Open Handset Alliance led by Google. It is one of the most widely used mobile OS. Day by day its popularity is increasing rapidly all over the world. Its have millions of application on the online.

Learning Android

Making android application is so interesting. Ok, lets start. We look first PC configuration-

1.Windows XP (32-bit), Vista (32- or 64-bit), or Windows 7 (32- or 64-bit)

2. Mac OS X 10.5.8 or later (x86 only)

3.Linux (tested on Ubuntu Linux, Lucid Lynx)

*GNU C Library (glibc) 2.7 or later is required.

*On Ubuntu Linux, version 8.04 or later is required.

Required environments –

  1. Java Development Kit (JDK)  5 or greater
  2. Eclipse IDE for Java Developers
  3. Android plugin

Installation complete ? ok, lets start first android application hello android..

Run the Eclipse.The window look like following –


click File->new project->android project.. then  press Next

then another will come ..

fillup as following..

Project name : HelloAndroid

Select the target device /avd

Application name : HelloAndroid <Which will be auto generated, you can give another name>

Package name: com.altaf.hello

Create Activity : HelloAndroidActivity

then click finish.

If you write correctly then following window will come..

Now write following code

package com.altaf.hello;

import android.os.Bundle;
import android.widget.TextView;

public class HelloAndroidActivity extends Activity {
/** Called when the activity is first created. */
public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
TextView mytext=new TextView(this);
mytext.setText(“Hello Android”);



I don’t use layout here.

Now run the program.

Click on the right button of mouse keep the mouse upon the application name as following

then the outcome as follows..

Hmn.. Enjoy android !!
